Excape Exmouth

A Game's Afoot

Overview

This was our third visit and final visit to Exmouth back in December 22 to meet Dan and Helen it what has been one of our more enjoyable companies to visit! The company is located right in the centre of Exmouth and there is a big car park just outside of the town centre, making it about a 5 minute walk to the building. You walk up one flight of stairs where we were greeted by Helen, our game master and we were given a brief on solving a mystery and were given a walkie talkie to ask for help if needed and taken into the room to start. We won’t ruin the start of the room but there was a nice little twist with us all needing to do something to start the game and this was a nice refreshing twist.

The room was set up as a mid 1900’s office and even though the room has been open for a while, it still looked authentic and you could quickly get into the theme (with the help of detective hats). Decoration was of a good standard and mobility issues wouldn’t be a problem in the room. Lighting was also fine in the room.

The majority of this room was collecting evidence to rule out suspects. There weren’t many locks to get through and some different puzzles that we hadn’t see before made it quite interesting. We only really struggled on one point of the point and that was our own fault collider not using an obvious tool to help. The room flowed nicely and we weren’t running around looking lost for any real point of the game.

The game master gave us a walkie talkie and when we needed the one hint, it was helpful without giving much away, which is what you want from a GM. Apart from that, there was no other interaction between us and the GM throughout the game.

Round Up

We managed to escape with plenty of time in this room and the beginning was a nice different twist to start a game and set the tone. We let ourselves down with one part that we needed help on but this didn’t ruin the experience of the game. As mentioned; the room is a bit old now and compared to the other 2 rooms at Excape, this one could probably do with an update at some point as the other rooms are that good and fresh. It’s nice that a room isn’t littered with padlocks and gave us something else to think about throughout the time.

Excape is a brilliant little place and the owners are lovely and welcoming and we will certainly be back when there are more rooms to do.

Excape Exmouth

The Vault

Overview

This was our second visit to Exmouth to once again meet Dan and Helen at Excape. Excape is located in the centre of Exmouth and there is a big car park just outside of the town centre, making it about a 5 minute walk to the building. You walk up one flight of stairs where we were greeted by Dan, our game master. The Vault had only just opened when we visited so we were looking forward to getting in and to get going. We were given a brief on the job in hand in breaking into the vault were given a walkie talkie to ask for help if needed and taken into a small lift to start. We won’t ruin the start but we hadn’t experienced anything like it before and we all really enjoyed it before the main event.

The whole game was brilliantly put together and upon reflection was the best room we have done to date. With it being a new room, everything was in mint condition and the throughout the whole journey of the game, the attention to detail was really impressive. As we went through the story there were surprises and different mechanical elements which really were brilliant and submitted you into the who experience. The entrance into the bank was a security office before leading it not the main vault. We could go into more detail into the room and story but we don’t want to ruin it for you.

There was a really good mix of puzzles in the game, making sure all 4 of us felt we contributed something. The game flowed really well and when trying to crack the vault you could be overwhelmed with amount of padlocks but because of how well the game was put together, we didn’t feel we were trying different codes all over the place and everything seemed to go into place. We didn’t need any nudges in this room and that is a testament to how well the puzzles are set up and the linear approach taken. The ending was also one of the better ones we had experienced in the rooms we have done, making it a nice ending to the story, which doesn’t always happen!!

The game master gave us a walkie talkie but as mentioned we didn’t need any hints in the room but from previous experience with Excape, anything hints needed they normally see what kind of team you are first before jumping in and giving you some help.

Round Up

We managed to escape with plenty of time and we all left saying that this was the best room we had done. We all really enjoyed the story and the room set top is fantastic. Dan and Helen have put a lot work into this room and it really shows. The game flowed so easy and even though some of the puzzles were quite tricky, we knew what we were looking for to get us there. The beginning and ending of the game are different from other experiences we have had and were enjoyable for us. If you visit Exmouth then you really must try this room. Yes we escaped with a bit of time left but this didn’t hamper our experience at all of this brilliant room.
