Overview
This was our second visit to Red House in Torquay after really enjoying the previous visit here on the last train the Paris. There is a multi story card park very close by in the centre of Torquay which is about a 2 minute walk to the escape room. You enter a small lobby where you have to wait until the GM is ready for you and then you are taken to a very large reception area for the briefing. The room itself is based on an 80’s boy’s bedroom and a popular Netflix programme with an upside down world. The room itself is designed well enough but for us it was missing the wow factor and could have been done a lot better. None the less, the room was designed well and everything worked as it should. The game seemed a little quiet, when we were thinking and working puzzles out, there wasn’t much atmosphere within the room. The clues and puzzles seemed to flow well but one thing of note, if you are a team of big numbers, you might struggle in the game. We were a team of 4 and we thought that was plenty for the space available.
As mentioned above, the first impression of the room was decent. It was based on a 80’s bedroom and aesthetically there wasn’t anything wrong it at all. When the game opened up, lighting might have been a problem but we all managed to see ok. Everything worked as it should and all the decorations enhanced the experience of the room and made you feel like you were going back in time. Nothing was broken and nothing looked tired so on that point, we were more than satisfied.
The game flowed very nicely for us. We enjoyed the mixture of padlocked games and games themed on a children’s bedroom. The two areas of the game mixed in well together as you progressed through. We didn’t really struggle on any aspect of this game and we didn’t feel ourselves needing that much input from the GM. Even though we got through the puzzles and escaped, we don’t really know how we solved it and how Arthur came back to us. The clues all added up nicely and we didn’t end up skipping anything by mistake which can sometimes happen but not in this game for us.
The game master gave us a walkie talkie but there was no way in which she gave us a hint/clue without us asking for one which was slightly frustrating but this does seem to happen more and more now. The GM was really helpful when needed, which wasn’t often at all but have a GM run reception and multiple rooms does mean that they can sometimes become distracted and this isn’t any fault of theirs. However, this did not effect our experience of this game on the day.
Round Up
We all agreed that we did enjoy this game and obviously escaping always helps. We enjoyed the theme and this the second missing children’s mystery room that we have done and it did not disappoint. We got into the theme straight away and the added twist of the second part of the game made it really interesting and we definitely had to work well together to escape. We have recently learned that Red House is closing in Torquay and this is a huge shame to the local area as both games here were really good fun. If you get the chance to go before it closes, make sure you go!!

Overview
This was our first visit to Red House in Exeter, having completed both rooms at their sister company in Torquay. We enjoyed our visits to Torquay so we were looking forward to taking on the newly produced Danziger Experiment.
Although it is tucked away, there is a car park a couple of minutes down the road so no issues getting there or getting parked even though it’s in the middle of Exeter. We were greeted by Angel and we were taking to a old cinema style reception area for the briefing. We were told the one of us would be separated from the group to start with and I was nominated for this. The briefing was given to us about stopping the experiment going wrong and having to escape all together. Covid rules had gone by the time of our visit so no need for masks but there was hand sanitiser if we wished to use it.
I was taken into a very small room on my room. Warning- if you do not like small spaces then don’t nominate yourself to go in alone. I was told that the team could see me but I could t see them. My room was very basic and lacked a quality finish to it. The rest of the team had a lab set out with everything working as it should and all props in a good enough quality. The door in my room did not shut for a few moments which dampened the start as Angel had to try and fix the mag lock. This also hampered us later in the game.
Whether we over complicated the clues in this game or I just didn’t turn up for the first half, I could not get out of my room for far too long. In the end, Angel had to give me a couple of hints in the radio as she could see I was struggling:l. The clues were very straightforward but I was over complicating things. Once we were all together the game flowed very quickly. The puzzles were not tricky at all and did not take a lot of thinking. There’s aren’t many locks in this room or hidden codes. The end puzzle was good although as previously mentioned the mag lock did not appear to work correctly when we thought we had escaped and had to get Angel in the radio to confirm with her that we had in fact escaped.
As mentioned, Angel could see I was struggling at the beginning and gave me some hints over the radio. The rest of the team was not allowed to ask for help until I had joined them, which dragged out the beginning a lot longer than was needed. There was no tv screen for hints and a clock on the wall appeared after we all got together. The only way of communication for hints was the radio. Once we all got together we did not need any hints as we got through the room pretty quickly.
Round Up
Although we escaped, we all agreed afterwards that we didn’t really enjoy this room too much. Webster that was because we were separated for half of it, again mainly my doing, but we didn’t quick get into the game. The ending did slightly ruin it for us as we thought we had escaped but had to speak to Angel about it over the radio and it was a bit of duff ending. The mag lock not working at the beginning for me wasn’t a major issue but just didn’t start things off great. The game isn’t that tricky at all and doesn’t require a lot of thinking and we over complicated a lot of it. We did enjoy the Torquay rooms more than the Danziger and we don’t know whether we will rush back to complete the other room in Exeter but it was an easy game to get into and we have certainly done worse.
Worth doing if you are in the area but not our favourite and do the Torquay rooms, especially the last train to Paris!!
